Menopause is an experience that is unique to each woman. Some women find the transition to be a smooth one with few complications. However, the majority of women discover the unfortunate truth that menopause can lead to frustrating changes in everyday life as you’ve known it for so many years. The symptoms of menopause can be vast, but can vary between women.
While there are certain medications that can improve individual symptoms of menopause, none of them actually target the true cause of menopause, which is a sudden decline in your hormone levels. With hormone restoration using bioidentical hormones, we are able to target the root issue of menopause, which is hormonal imbalance. When proper balance is restored, resolution of most if not all of your troubling symptoms is achievable. Most importantly, women usually return satisfied and saying “I feel like myself again.”
Unfortunately, there has been a lot of confusion about hormone replacement, which comes from the Women’s Health Initiative Study. This study used horse derived estrogen (Premarin) and a synthetic progestin (Medroxyacetate Progesterone or Provera). These results do not apply to bio-identical hormone therapy which has proven to be safe.
The term bioidentical refers to hormones that are identical in structure and function to those that your body has always produced naturally. While it may be a surprise, the hormones previously used for decades as hormone replacement therapy were not bioidentical. In fact, the estrogen used was actually derived from pregnant horses, and the progesterone was synthetically created. As it turns out, estrogens from horses and synthetic progesterones are very different in composition, structure, and function than natural human hormones. Your body does not know the difference between the hormones it makes and bio-identical hormones, because they are exactly identical in molecular structure. Studies continue to show bio-identical hormones to be safer than synthetic hormones and also those from horses.
Bioidentical hormones are typically given in the form of a cream that is simply rubbed into your skin. At your initial evaluation, hormone levels are tested to determine appropriate dosing for your replacement. Each woman is evaluated separately and dosages are based on your own unique biochemistry. Not only is your prescription personalized to suit your needs, but hormone levels are also monitored over time to assure appropriate levels are maintained for optimum results.
